(soulmate!au ; you have your soulmate’s first words on your wrist)

You had to admit. The older you got, the less and less the tattoo that was dyed into your wrist meant. And to believe that on your fifteenth birthday you were so excited to finally wake up and see the words that were going to appear on your wrist that you couldn’t sleep the night before.

‘I’m so sorry, he loves water.’ That was what you had arisen to in the morning. Although you had to admit, it could be worse. Much worse. Your friend Azusa, who has yet to find her soul mate has ‘I wouldn’t go in there if I were you.’ tattooed onto her wrist. When she found out she has to live with that for the rest of her life she nearly had a heart attack.

All of your other friends had already found their soul mates, and some were even married after finding their own. You could say you used to be discouraged by your lack of success but now you’re just rather indifferent, plus your friend was in the same boat so you could mope together.

A few days prior your friends and you had all planned a girls’ night out to the beach with plans to all together watch the sun as it set. Nobody’s soul mates were coming; it was just you and your friends for the first time in a while.

You made sure to look nice for your outing with the girls. Whenever you’d go out with your friends minimal effort was put into it, plus you had already came to terms that your soul mate didn’t come out during the day, or something ridiculous along those lines so why should you have to attempt in looking over the top nice? You decided you’d use this one time to look nice for your friends, it’d give them a little shock to see you looking like a million bucks for the first time in ages.

You took your time to exfoliate in the shower, you even did a deep condition on your hair. You almost gave yourself a manicure but then you realized that was pushing it a little. It was just the beach.

The time you told yourself you’d leave came rolling around so you packed your bag for the beach and headed out and down the road to where your friends await. Upon seeing you your friends playfully hollered at you even though it was apparent that they as well put a little more effort into their appearance than usual.

“Someone’s looking cuuute!” Your friends all chimed together as you were finally close enough for them to speak. Your cheeks darkened and you waved your hand in dismissal.

“Please, this is edging on a special event so I thought why not.” You started the movement of heading along to the beach, your cheeks still flaming. You had previously hoped that your extra effort put into your appearance wasn’t noticeable, but apparently it was, very much so at that.

“Do you ever think that the water your tattoo is talking about is the beach?” Azusa came up beside you and held your hand up so she could re-read your quote as if it was her first time.

“I already told you, what’s going to happen is that (y/n) is going to be drinking a nice glass of water, some guy is going to run up and chug the rest for her, then an apologetic friend will come following.” Your other friend, Madoko chimed in, laughing loudly to her own story that was being told for the nth time since you two had met.

“I hope that’s what it is at this point. Since I’m waiting so long I better laugh my ass off.” You grumbled and continued looking ahead, the beach coming closer and closer into view.

Before you knew it your shoes were kicked off and you shed the top layer of your clothes, stuffing them away into your bag after taking your towel out. It was still day light so you and your friends had plenty of time to play around in the water and the sand before you would huddle up on the shore so you could do some sunset watching.

The first thing you did was lay your towel out and use your bag as a weight to keep it from flying away in the wind. Sunscreen came next and then you finally tied your hair up. Your deep conditioned hair wasn’t going to get ruined on your watch.

After you were sure none of your precious hair strands were going to touch the water you joined your friends who were already splashing around and having a good time in the water, your hands held out hesitantly to make sure that none of the water they were splashing around would get on your hair.

“You guys what if we meet (y/n)’s soul mate while we’re here?” Your friend Erika said in a rather cheesy voice in between splashing you and the others.

“It would make sense. We’re at a beach, her tattoo’s about water…” Madoko hummed happily to the thought of you finally finding your soul mate. You hated to rain on everyone’s parade, but you really had stopped expecting to meet them at this point in your life. You weren’t old, but it was typical for people to meet their soul mate in their last years of high school, or fresh out of high school. However you had heard of and met people who came into contact with their soul mate many years older than you were. You weren’t even the type to give up on stuff easily. You just credited your discouraged mindset to the fact that everyone else around you had found their soul mate already, then that left you out to dry, waiting for our own with only one of your friends.

“I don’t think it’s going to happen here or anytime soon, but I’ll let you guys pretend like it will.” Even though your tone when you spoke was rather playful, every part of you meant each of your words.

“My tattoo is broken, remember?” Your teasing tone stayed and you finally began to splash them back, earning many laughs from the group.

“If your tattoo is broken, that means mine is too!” Azusa whined in response and gave you a nice, hard splash. You barely escaped with enough time to make sure your hair wouldn’t get a drop on it.

“Your tattoos aren’t…” Erika’s eyes squinted as her words slowly came to a halt, she was watching someone, or something behind you and by the time you could look, you were drenched, your messy bun included.

“I’m so sorry, he loves water.” A voice went through one ear and out the other. Your eyes were clenched closed and you were honestly rather upset your bun was now sopping wet.

“No, it’s really fine. Don’t worry.” You finally peeled your eyes open to take in the sight of a black haired young man contently now wading in the water and then a tall light brown haired young man looking at you with an apologetic smile.

You heard your friends begin to whisper among themselves and that was when you realized.

“What did you say?” You and the tall male said in unison, except he had a polite ‘excuse me’ tacked onto the beginning.

Almost as it were on cue you both looked down at your wrists and then at each other, your mouths agape.

“Honestly I’m just relieved that my friend splashing you was all that I had to apologize for…” The boy finally broke the silence. “I’m Makoto by the way.” An eye smile lit up his features as he offered his hand to you which you shyly, but gratefully accepted.

This was it. You had finally found him and you weren’t mad about it like you assumed you’d be. Sure you had waited quite a long time, but he was just so charming that you couldn’t be mad even if you had tried. The whole ordeal seemed to be moving in slow motion. It was surreal for you to finally meet the person you had longing to meet your whole life.

“I’m (y/n)…” You said quietly, still taking a moment to take everything that had just happened in.

“Is it too shameless to ask you on a date already?” Makoto, smile never faded and your shy feeling was suddenly replaced with giddy butterflies.

“Not at all, my parents met and then got married a month later.” You finally offered him a smile back.

“This is literally so precious…” You heard one of your friends gush to the other from behind you. You cleared your throat loudly when the comments became more frequent, grabbing onto Makoto’s hand so you could lead him away. Your heart jumped in your chest when he gave your hand a gentle squeeze upon you lacing your fingers with his own.

“So, where do you want to go on our date, then? I really like movies?” You asked happily, mainly to strike up conversation before your friends could embarrass you with their gushing.
